One of the most striking sights of our honeymoon was seeing Mount Kilimanjaro for the first time. We saw it for the first time on our flight from Mombasa to Amboseli and we were awed by how enormous and stunning it was. We spent the next two days staying at an eco-lodge called Porini Lodge and enjoying daily game drives in Amboseli National Park.

Amboseli is famous for its elephant herds and it did not disappoint. We watched three different large herds as they felled acacia trees, wallowed in mud and trekked across the landscape in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. We were very lucky to have clear, cloudless weather while we were there which allowed Matthew to photograph the elephants in front of Kilimanjaro -- one of the classic Kenyan photos!

We also watched countless wildebeest and zebra herds, hippos wallowing in reedy swamps, a vast array of striking birds and a mother cheetah with three cubs eating a gazelle. One of the unique features of Porini was that it offered a night game drive. During our night drive we saw a serval cat, an African wildcat, a bat-eared fox, an African hare and plenty of owls. Each evening ended with sundowners in front of Kilimanjaro and a bonfire.
