Matthew was born in Oxford, England and considers himself Anglo-American. Growing up, he lived in Tokyo, Japan; the American Midwest; the Bruderhof, an intentional Christian community and inner-city Leicester, one of England's most culturally diverse cities. After his undergraduate degree in history and religion from Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, USA, he went on to work as a humanitarian aid worker in different parts of the world (Nicaragua, Bosnia, Zambia, Iraq, Dominican Rep., Bolivia) for three years. Since 2004, he has been a student at the London School of Economics and Political Science, getting a Master's in development studies and now working on a PhD in government. He researches the politics of bilateral foreign aid administration by looking at landmine clearance programs in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Sudan.
