Kenya Honeymoon 2007: Nairobi, July 7 and 8

Baby elephant at the Sheldrick Trust Emily making a new friend at the Giraffe Orphanage Matthew tickles a giraffe at the Giraffe Orphanage Emily gorging at Carnivore

We're on our honeymoon! After weeks of wedding preparation, the wedding of our dreams, an emotionally and physically exhausting final few days in DC and a whirlwind of logistics planning in London, we finally arrived in Kenya!

The morning after our arrival, we set off for Langata, a suburb of Nairobi and at the edge of the Nairobi National Park. Here we visited the David Sheldrick Trust, which runs an elephant orphanage for abandoned baby elephants.

Needless to say, we LOVED this! We stood in a roped off area and watched 4 two-year-old elephants romp around, trip over their own feet and kick soccer balls back and forth with the gathered masses. Very cute.

After the elephants were finished with their daily frolic, we headed for the giraffe orphanage. Here we had our hands and faced licked by several giraffes' long blue tongues. We fed them little pellets and they ate right out of our hands. We got some very funny pictures and laughed a lot -- the tongues were long and blue and sticky and it felt so funny to have them wrapped around your hand. Some of the giraffes were quite persistent while others were more gently nibbling with their lips like horses. One giraffe licked Emily's ear! We washed our hands several times just in case either of us happens to be allergic to giraffe...

We then headed down to Carnivore, listed as among the top 50 restaurants in the world. As the name suggests, it is an all you can eat meat fest. As long as you have your little carnivore flag up on your table, waiters come by with huge chunks of meat, fresh off an enormous grill in the center of the restaurant, and cut you pieces of meat off large swords. The meat was deliciously tender and we gorged ourselves until we could barely move. We then finished it off with sorbet.

We ate an enormous amount of meat: bbq chicken, pork spare ribs, grilled beef slabs, turkey, beef sausage, lamb, ostrich and ostrich meat balls. All in all, an incredible meal. An incredible first day in Kenya!
